Newly-built 18-hole championship course an hour from Hanoi
A fairly recent addition to the Ho Chi Minh golf scene, Harmonie Golf Park, which is located around an hour's drive from the city centre, is an excellent 18-hole championship golf course from designer Jim Engh. The course is divided into two sets of nine holes, known as the Lani Course and Dani Course, both fully grassed with Bermuda, which is unusual for the region and ensures fast and consistent playing surfaces. Water features prominently on over half of the holes, with occasional rock features adding to the aesthetic.
The Lani Course opens with a long par 5 that plays around a lake, making any attempt to each the green in two a big risk. There are only two bunkers, but their clever positioning in the landing zone and just in front of the green mean you'll do well to avoid them. There's a similar set up at the par-4 4th, where one bunker pinches the fairway on the optimal line and another squiggle of a sand trap wraps around the right edge of the green.
There follows a run of three excellent water holes, with the 5th a short par-4 that is theoretically driveable but requires both length and accuracy to clear the water and find a narrow green sandwiched between two long bunkers. The generous fairway at the 6th means only the wildest of slices off the tee will get wet, while the 7th is a pretty par 3 that plays over water to a green edged by another of those long bunkers.
Of the closing holes of the Lani Course, the 8th is a noteworthy par 5 with a pair of bunkers right in the middle of the fairway in each landing zone, and a small pot bunker just to the left of the green. The contours of the fairway seem to suck the ball towards danger, so it's a real challenge to come through unscathed.
After the turn, the Dani Course starts with an excellent par-4 featuring a raised tee box and a shot over water to the fairway below. The plateau green is surrounded by a large bunker that stretches around three sides of the putting surface, making for an exhilarating start to the back nine.
The 12th is another par 3 with water from tee to green, and the par-5 13th features a fairway that routes around a lake, with a wide bunker dominating the fairway in the lead up to the green, putting paid to any hopes of sneaking on in two.
The 16th has an unusual, narrow 100-metre-long green, meaning that the length of tee shots can vary greatly from day to day, and it's entirely possible to not have a direct putt to the hole. However, the green complex is bowl shaped, so most tee shots should find the centre of the green if they find the green at all (although given its size, it's an embarrassing one to miss).
The finishing hole is a great par-5, with tee shots having to avoid a massive bunker to find a fairway that is dramatically narrowed by a water hazard that only those that are longest off the tee can avoid. From there, a trio of bunkers in the landing zone mean you have to play an accurate second before a wedge into a lakeside green featuring one final bunker on the left.
The clubhouse at Harmonie Golf Park is impressive, with VIP locker rooms, a restaurant serving both Asian and European cuisine, and a pro shop. The golf course is also home to a driving range with the first fully automatic ball system in Vietnam, which allows golfers to focus on their shots without any distractions.
Overall, Harmonie Golf Park is a wonderful addition to the golfing scene in Vietnam, and it's sure to become a regular stop for golfers visiting the country.
