About
Two excellent Ronald Fream-designed courses amongst the best in South Vietnam
Situated around 30 km north of Ho Chi Minh, Long Thanh Golf Club is a popular 36-hole layout made up of two excellent courses, The Hill Course and The Lakes Course. The former features tree-lined fairways and undulating terrain, while the latter is flatter but with more water hazards to negotiate. The fairways are generous on both courses, and the rough isn't too thick, so these aren't courses to daunt the high handicapper, although there are plenty of high-lipped bunkers and you might face some very long putts on the oversize greens.
Both courses feature a number of memorable holes. On the Hill Course, the par-3 4th unusually features two greens, with the nearer one the more tricky, a pair of bunkers either side and the lake further to the left, while the par 4 6th features a nervy approach over water to a green protected by a wrap-around bunker in front.
The 10th features a tough drive over water, and it's followed by a very tough par 5 that doglegs around a lake to a green with a very large bunker in front. The 12th is a very attractive par 3 with a peninsula green guarded by a trio of sand traps, while the 18th requires another of those long carries over water before your final short approach to a lakeside green protected by three more sand traps.
The Lakes Course features wider fairways and fewer trees although, as the name would suggest, there's more water to contend with, starting with the way the lake intrudes into the 1st fairway, meaning you can't afford for your drive to go too far. There's water both sides of the 2nd, a narrow par-4 with a trio of bunkers just short of the green, and the putting surface at the short par 3 3rd has water left and right and bunkers front and back.
The 8th is another challenging par 3 with water from tee to green and bunkers on three sides, while the 11th is a long par 5 with only a narrow gap between two fairway bunkers and a tricky water carry into the green.
There's only one hole, the 12th, where water isn't a factor, and it's tough to keep your ball dry on the closing stretch, with an island green at the short 14th and water on both sides of the 17th, probably the pick of the back nine. A long par-5 with a number of bunkers in the landing zone, a long accurate drive is required unless you want to be laying up on your second, as the lake violently pinches the fairway just short of the green, a pair of large bunkers to the right.
The clubhouse at Long Thanh Golf Club is superb, with a pro shop, excellent locker rooms, and a popular restaurant serving both local and Western food.
Reviews
"One of the best courses I have played in Asia"
I have played many of the top courses in Asia and we played this course early on in our stay in Vietnam and it was very special. Superb clubhouse facilities and the courses is much more difficult than it appears when you look at the scorecard. The hills course is especially challenging with some raised tees and some sharp doglegs and some well-placed palms waiting to swallow your ball. The excellent caddies made the experience even better. It only takes an hour to reach the courses form the city and its certainly worth it.Course Info
