Beautiful but challenging links-style course ranked amongst Vietnam's best
Set in the Mui Ne - Phan Thiet resort and tourism corridor, some 200 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, Sea Links Golf & Country Club is a very challenging links-style course that was voted Vietnam's Best Golf Course at the 2014 World Golf Awards. It's set on rolling sand dunes adjacent to the South China Sea with heavily contoured fairways that offer good roll by rarely a flat lie, tricky elevated greens with subtle breaks and steep drop-offs, and some stiff breezes that only elevate the challenge at this 7700-yard course.
Right from the off, you'll know that this is a special course. The 1st is a 388-yard dogleg-right par 4 that plays to a green backed by the sea, a trio of bunkers and some steep drop-offs placing a premium on an accurate approach, and it's followed by another dogleg, this time a sand-heavy par 5 with a green protected by a very large bunker.
The 6th is a 647-yard par 5 with a large lake in the middle of a split fairway, requiring players to decide which side to take. The right side is shorter but very narrow, with OB nearby, and the left route is longer but has a more open green if the fairway bunker is avoided.
The 8th is the pick of the par 3s, playing from an elevated tee towards the ocean, with the undulating green guarded on three sides by some substantial bunkers, while the front nine finishes with a long uphill par 4 back towards the clubhouse, with a tough approach required to a heavily-guarded tabletop green.
The quality doesn't slip on the back nine, which starts with a tough drive over water at the par-5 10th and plays to an attractive green complex that backs onto the ocean. After a pair of sand-heavy par 4s, the 14th is a 241-yard monster of a par 4, a pair of massive bunkers protecting the small, clover-shaped green, while the 15th is a short par-4 where it's important to avoid getting blocked out by the lone tree that can easily make your short iron approach over water doubly difficult.
The long par-4 16th features the course's largest bunker, which runs up the second half of the hole and wraps around the green, all too easy to find as at 474 yards, you're bound to be facing a long second in blustery conditions, while the finishing hole is a 622-yard par 5 that requires you to thread your way right and left between water and sand as the zigzagging fairway leads back to the clubhouse. It's an intoxicating finish.
The modern clubhouse offers spotless locker rooms and helpful staff, with two restaurants serving local and international cuisine and providing excellent views of the sea.
Overall, Sea Links Golf & Country Club is a must-course that's well worth the trip, and indeed, it's a good option to stay overnight and play the course one more time before heading back to Hanoi. Highly recommended.
