Taekwang Jeongsan Country Club
About
Highly playable resort course on an island in the Saigon river
Situated on a large island in the Saigon river and reachable in just 30 minutes by speedboat from the pier in District 1 in Ho Chi Minh, the Korean-owned Taekwang Jeongsan Country Club is one of the newest resort-style courses to open in the region. It's a 7,295-yard 18-hole course designed by Golfplan, who have made the best of flattish terrain to create an enjoyable challenge for all abilities. Extensive bunkering and water on more than half the holes mean you're kept on your toes, while the use of Paspalum grass on the fairways, greens, and tees ensures plush conditions and enticing lies.
The first nine holes, known as the Sun Course, play alongside the river, with water a threat on every hole, although its the pair of large bunkers just short of the green at the short par-4 opener that will cause more issues. The river is more of a threat on the right of long, narrow par 5 that follows, but again it's sand that threatens more, with accurate placement between two large bunkers required on your tee shot and another extensive bunker complex waiting on approach.
A particularly large bunker awaits at the elbow of the doglegging 6th, another long par 5 with the river to the right, while a stream cuts across the 8th fairway meaning you can't afford to be too long off the tee. With almost all the water on the Sun Course sitting to the right, be ready for a long day if you have a tendency to slice the ball.
The back nine, known as the Moon Course, starts with another short par 4, something of a theme at this course, and there's a chance to get off to a good start if you can avoid the bunkers to the left of the landing zone and to the right of the green. The 14th is a very pretty par 3 that plays over water to a green flanked by another of those trademark large bunkers, and there's a beach bunker running all the way up the right hand side of 15th, which at 481 yards will prove a very tough par 4.
The finishing hole is a great one. A par 5 with water running up the left, you must drive over the lake to a narrow fairway, making sure to stop short of the large bunker, before an accurate second along the water line to leave yourself a short approach over more water to the narrow and undulating final green, where two more bunkers lie in wait.
The very large clubhouse at Taekwang Jeongsan Country Club features elegant locker rooms, spa facilities, two decent restaurants serving local and Korean cuisine, and a well-stocked pro shop.
