Water-heavy links-style course kept in excellent condition
The first course to open in the western region of Ho Chi Minh City, West Lakes Golf & Villas is a water-heavy links-style championship golf course designed by renowned architect Thomson Perrett. It's one of the first courses in the region to use Zeon Zoysia on the undulating fairways, which are consequently a joy to hit from, while TifEagle greens ensure your putts run fast and true. While there's extensive bunkering to contend with, the main challenge is keeping your ball dry, as water is a factor on every hole.
The front nine of the course starts with wide fairways and generous landing areas, but the penalty for missing your mark can be severe as the playing surfaces typically run right up to the water. The 3rd is a great par 5 with a pair of bunkers in the landing zone and an island green that probably isn't reachable in two, while another approach over water is required at the par 4 that follows, as the green juts out into the water at right angles to the rest of the hole.
The 8th is a very pretty par 3 with an island green featuring a trio of bunkers in front, while the nine bunkers on the 9th ensure that even though water is, for once, not much of a threat, you'll still be doing well to end the front nine on a high.
The back nine follows the same theme, albeit with fairways that are a touch less generous, notably at the 12th where there's only a narrow gap between the fairway bunkers and the water. The 13th is a short par 4 with water running across the hole just short of the green, while the 14th is one of two par 3s on the back nine that feature water from tee to green.
The last is a great finishing hole, a doglegging long par 4 with water hugging each side of the fairway and a pair of bunkers either side of the landing zone; your drive must carry the water and ideally find the right side of the fairway to open up the route to a green that sits right on the water, making for a tough final approach.
West Lakes Golf & Villas offers excellent facilities, including an extensive grass driving range attached to the clubhouse. The clubhouse features upscale changing rooms with a jacuzzi, a well-stocked pro shop, and restaurant serving Western, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese dishes.

Average layout but very good condition and pace of play
We played the course on a Monday morning and managed to get around the course in two and half hours. The condition of the course was excellent but the the layout was what I would consider a good Bangkok type of course, meaning relatively flat with a lot of water hazards with bunkers being the main defences.Good courses but needs time to mature and caddies need training
The course is in pretty good condition. Fairways are great to play off and sand in traps is not too heavy and always consistent. Greens have been over-contoured, and we encountered some pretty crazy pin positions – be prepared for lots of 3-putts! The caddies are all very new and inexperienced so don’t expect too much help as our caddies remained mute throughout the round. Overall the other facilities ( locker room, showers, restaurant, driving range) are perfectly adequate.Course Info
